I love long summer evenings!

Last night after supper mom and I went kayaking out on Lake Kathlyn.  That was the fourth time I have been kayaking out there this summer.  Each time is different.  We started out with a breeze, but by  the time we were halfway around the lake the water became very smooth.  It was fun to look at the ripples coming off the kayak and watch the rings from the paddle.  Turning to watch the rings from the paddle disappear behind me did not help me go very straight, so soon I faced forward again so that I could go at least a little straighter.
Each time I have been kayaking the weather has been beautiful.  I had gone out there in my swimming suit a couple of times, but not actually gone swimming.  I think I have become somewhat of a wimp for cold water, I like to think of it as acclimatizing somewhat to the weather and conditions in Louisiana.  As we were kayaking, mom commented that the water was quite warm.  I only partially agreed, but for Smithers the water was quite nice.  After finishing kayaking, I decided that I was going to at least get in the water once.  I knew that it was supposed to be the last really warm day, so I decided to take advantage of it.  The was startlingly cold at first, but I adjusted somewhat.
After being in the water a little while, I was floating on my back and enjoying the evening sunshine and the remaining warmth in the air.  I enjoyed the fact that at just before 8pm it was 27 C (84 F) outside and the sun was still shining.  The sun still had a ways to go before it would be behind the mountain.  As we drove home to our house, the sun was going behind the mountain.  We live close to the mountain, so the sun sets earlier here than in other parts of town.  Despite being in the shadow of the mountain around 8pm it didn't get dark until after 10pm and the northern horizon stayed light.
The long summer evenings are one of the things I really enjoy about summers in Smithers.
