How big was Jericho?

This morning mom and I walked the Perimeter Trail around Smithers.  It took us an hour and 35 minutes including our stops to get rocks and dirt out of our shoes.  When we started it was about 10 C (50 F) outside and by the time we arrive home it was 14 C (57 F).  We both walked in shorts and t-shirts, which was cool in the shade, but warm in the sunshine at the end of our walk.  We thought later that maybe we should have gone the opposite direction and had the sun to warm us up at the beginning of our walk, and then ended in the shade when we were already warm from walking.
While we were walking the question popped into my head "How far was it around Jericho?".  I always thought of Jericho as a rather large city, but also wondered how long it would take to walk around it.  And if it was large, how could they walk around it 7 times in one day?  The priests would have been carrying the ark - which was probably heavy considering it was covered in gold.  They were probably  more used to walking than I am, considering that they had done a lot of traveling on foot through the wilderness.  Whatever the case, I was glad that I was not walking around Jericho 7 times today, although I did enjoy going around Smithers once.

  1. I checked on the most reliable source known to man (...the magic Mr. Google...) and found several sites that stated that the distance was probably about 1/2 a mile. That doesn't fit with the size in my head, in my head I would have guessed a few miles. Hmmm, interesting. If it really only was half a mile, I bet the Israelites at the front of the group overlapped with those near the back of the group at least once!
